Deep setbacks that work beautifully with a gas furnace can backfire on a heat pump: recovering a large temperature drop calls for auxiliary electric resistance heat, which is the most expensive heat in the house, and you can spend more overnight than you saved all day. Use a heat-pump-aware thermostat, keep setbacks shallow, and make sure the staging is configured for your equipment rather than left at the factory default.
